Now I know there's going to be a lot of ass-hurt people out there who say I'm just a kid and I don't know what the hell I'm talking about but to be fair...I haven't gotten around to seeing Looper, Argo, Zero Dark Thirty, Django Unchained, Silver Linings Playback, etc. etc. But fuck them! I only got around to seeing movies that would appeal to a "kid", I am 13 to be fair. Even though I'm turning 14 in two months. Please understand I do appreciate good movies like The Lord of the Rings trilogy, which are probably my favorite movies of all time. Now, I give you: THE TOP 8 MOVIES OF 2012 (THAT I'VE SEEN!) Please note: I also might fully review these.
8. Pitch Perfect
This movie follows a bunch of college age girls who form a singing group, much similar to the premise of Glee except this is actually good. It is genuinely good and just all around funny. It was the funniest (adult) movie I've seen all year! Ted was a meh for me, so it barely missed the Top 10, which disappoints me because I'm a fan of Seth MacFarlane's American Dad! Plus, for whatever reason, I love things that involve singing especially when the singers don't actually have an album. I'm not a fan of musicals that's for sure.
7. ParaNorman
This was a hugely unexpected good movie for me. Seeing the trailer for this in front of The Avengers kind of made me face-palm. Its jokes were surprisingly mature for a kids movie ("Aw man, it's the apocalypse and we're trapped in a library! There's an adult video store right next door") or something of that sort. Not to mention the first openly gay character in a kids movie, although it was subtle. This was amazingly good, I think it even topped Coraline for me.
6. The Avengers
Now if there's one thing I love, it's superheroes, so the idea of the most badass superheroes coming together is awesome! But it's all about the execution. This was...more or less good. I know what you're thinking, why isn't this lower if you hate it. I think the action is enough to justify it's place here. The jokes were a hit or miss for me but I guess this will have to hold me over until the Justice League film.
5. The Amazing Spider-Man
I know what you're thinking but this one is special to me! I grew up on the Sam Raimi Spider-Man movies so I didn't expect this to top it but it did! It had humor, heart, good chemistry on the protagonists, etc. It was everything I wanted it to be! A tip of the hat to Marc Webb who successfully topped my childhood. I loved Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker, he just really made the character like Heath Ledger did The Joker. I loved his awkwardness and stuttering (ex. "Okay, okay, okay, okay, okay, I gotta tell you this one thing, I gotta tell you this one thing and it's, it's about the, the car thief and the vigilante") plus he acts the way I would act around girls...at least ones that I don't hate.
4. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey
Believe it or not, I first wanted to see this for the trailers (Man of Steel and Stark Trek Into Darkness, how could I not?). I did however, watch The Fellowship of the Ring and some of The Two Towers beforehand. I loved every minute of it! Despite the distracting 3D (not HFR 48fps regular 3D alone!). My favorite scene was of course with Gollum, played by Andy Serkis. I think the best part overall was the end battle. People say it was bloated but I have no idea what they're talking about! This movie was the perfect length. However, after finishing The Return of the King, I don't think I can look at Bilbo Baggins without getting sad. I'll definitely be watching the following sequels.
3. The Dark Knight Rises
After watching this, I was basically in tears, which is good. That's how a proper trilogy comes to an end. I had recently got into Batman by watching the first two Nolan movies, but I was long anticipating this. Although, it gets a little dull after the 4th watch. I guess it just doesn't feel the same out of the theater. It's totally worth sitting for 2 hours and 45 minutes. Bane is the best villain possible and is just pure evil. The ending was confusing....and disappointing once you figure it all out. I don't think this was over-hyped though.
2. Wreck-it Ralph
I don't think it's the child in me that's putting Wreck-it Ralph almost on the top; I think it's the up-and-coming critic in me. Wreck-it Ralph was just such a good film! I mean...during it, I felt...sort of disappointed. The jokes were pretty much non-existent which was okay. I did smile and laugh at the game references and LOVED the CGI animated, it looked so beautiful on the big screen. That climax and ending was just genius! I definitely want this on DVD and...oh man. I know a movie is good when I can't even find the words to describe how much I love it and when my dad likes it. I used to watch crappy movies when I was a kid like Madagascar. I really want to watch this again! The only disappointment is that I thought Sonic the Hedgehog would come along with Ralph and others.
1. The Perks of Being a Wallflower
As far as good movies go, this is a damn good movie. This movie was so good, I saw it again two days later. For one thing, I can relate to the protagonist Charlie, played by Logan Lerman (Almost Spidey and Percy Jackson) in so many ways. I wasn't raped as a child luckily. SPOILER! Sorry about that. Plus, the acting was great! The ending was great, in so many ways. I am kind of surprised that teenagers who know who the heck The Smiths are have never heard David Bowie's "Heroes" (to be fair, I first heard it when my sister was watching Glee). I could go into spoiler-detail, but all I can say is go see this movie! I've already pre-ordered it on Amazon!
Some that missed the list were: Ted (just didn't do it for me), The Hunger Games (sorry, no one can make the list that I've reviewed)
