I've already read Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Sea of Monsters, but sadly that was about a year ago and I have shit memory. Wow, I really shouldn't use that kind of language when it's children books I'm reviewing. Eh, whatever onto this review....
After I loved Gregor the Overlander, I thought to myself, why am I not reading more series like this? So, I continued reading Percy Jackson, since I had a lot to catch up on. I started the third book, The Titan's Curse. The plot follows yet another prophecy this time possibly involving new half-bloods and archers.
The books starts out with Percy, Annabeth and Thalia, in human form, who go to a school dropped off by Percy's mom to go see the half-bloods Grover found at a private school, Bianca and Nico di Angelo. They go into the dance and there's a funny joke about Grover playing shit Jesse McCartney instead of Green Day. I like Thalia now. Anyways, Annabeth and Percy awkwardly dance to fit in, but soon Grover and Thalia are gone along with the di Angelos. They quickly go out into the hall and find a monster in the hallway. They fight it. So yeah, the usual. This leads to a battle out over some kind of cliff and the Hunters of Artemis show up. Thalia sees her foe, Zoe Nightshade, again. Apparently, Zoe wanted her to join the Hunters, but she declined.
They make the manticore fall off the cliff. The problem: He was holding Annabeth. They start arguing and stuff and decide to go back to Camp Half-Blood for another prophecy. This time the prophecy only wants Zoe, Thalia, Grover and Bianca. But of course, our hero must go. He uses Annabeth's cap of invisibility to go sneak with them. Also, Bianca joins the Hunters of Artemis, without even consulting her brother, but it's cool, he's too busy playing with himself. Mythomagic, of course. The group are looking for a hippocampus, which Percy saves, who has the power to destroy Olympus. He names it "Bessie" for whatever reason. I guess 'cause it's a cow and farms and shit names..
He uses his pegasus Blackjack from the second book to go to Washington, D.C. There Percy finds Dr. Thorn (the manticore/monster), Luke and "the General" who want to kill the hunters. Percy goes to warn them but the monster attacks and they have a hard time killing. They do and Percy takes it's coat, but they fucked up the National Air & Space Museum, so....while, at a gas station, Grover drinks coffee and senses the presence of Pan, who's a god who the satyrs also want to look for.
They then go to Gila Claw, Arizona and Percy has a conversation with the goddess, Aphrodite, who says Percy and Annabeth should have some kind of romance. The group go into a junkyard later and, feeling her brother is mad, Bianca takes a statue of Hades, as it was the only Mythomagic figure he didn't have. Then, a junkyard monster attacks them for stealing something. They put everything back, but Bianca wants to pull an Iron Man and try to kill the monster from the inside. She gives Percy the statue in case she doesn't make. The monster explodes and Bianca is presumably dead.
They travel all the way to the Hoover Dam, where they have a funny conversation about finding "the dam restroom" and buying some "dam french fries". It's especially funny because Zoe doesn't get what the heck they're laughing at. The skeleton warriors attack again, they were from D.C., but Percy uses a mortal, Rachel Elizabeth Dare, to lead the skeletons the wrong way. Percy finds out she can see through the mist.
Lots of other stuff happens, but in the end, Zoe dies by her father and Artemis makes a constellation for her. The gang find out there is a loophole for Annabeth or Thalia to escape the prophecy of the series. It is to join the hunters and Annabeth considers it. Thalia accepts it and she leaves in like 2 seconds. Back at camp, Poseidon, Percy's dad, tells him, Luke survived a fall that should've killed him. The gang have a kickass party and Percy must tell Nico the bad news. While out in the woods, Percy tells him the dreadful news, he really doesn't take it well. He cracks the ground open and makes skeleton warriors fall in there and he falls to. This is a huge revelation, as Percy discovers Nico is a son of Hades.
In the end, Percy must keep it a secret from everyone. Overall, I give this book an A. Probably the best Percy book I've heard so far...the humor was top-notch. Usually the chapter names are the only funny things we get in the book. I'm looking forward to reading more on the series. Goodbye, friends.
